Instatown, NY - June 22, 2011
- Residents in Instatown today are reeling from a new ruling that will allow residents to marry only by changing their relationship status on Facebook.
Mayor Rhonda James says that this new law won’t take effect until 2012, and is a boon for local tourism.
“People will be coming from miles around to get married here,” says James, “It’s an unprecedented move, but not entirely unexpected as people have been looking to Facebook for years to know whether their friends are in official relationships.”
Not everyone is happy with the change.
“This is a terrible idea,” says local resident Francis O’Conner, “I have to get married the hard way. First, I had to get a divorce from my first husband, then I had to have blood tests done and go through a ton of paperwork.”
Her neighbor, Jordan Trevors, had a different opinion.
“It was beautiful,” says Trevors, of his recent marriage proposal, “We went out to eat at this real nice diner that my girlfriend - sorry, fiance - likes, and I got down on one knee and asked her if she would consider sharing her life with me, her statuses with me, and change her relationship status on Facebook. She said yes, and we both updated them right away.”
Facebook is expected to release a statement later this afternoon. While many people are still questioning the legality of this move, for the most part, it has been well-received.
“Now we won’t even have to leave our house,” adds Trevors, “We just need a real fast internet connection. We plan on sending out the Facebook Event request later today.”
